How We Protect People
Case study of Ismail, a disabled Syrian man.
In 2022, Select Aid deployed a team of volunteers to the Turkish/Syrian border to provide aid and support to Ismail, a disabled man who lost both his hands in the war in Syria and had moved to Turkey with his family in search of safety and a better life.
The project involved retrofitting a home that was donated to Ismail by a doctor from the UK to make it more accessible, welcoming, and suitable for Ismail's family. The team noticed that the doors and windows were in disrepair and quickly got to work fixing them to ensure that the house was secure and protected from the elements. They also noticed that the roof was leaking and decided to install a new roof to prevent further damage and ensure that the family remained dry and protected during the winter. In addition, a new toilet with an upgrading plumbing system was necessary to improve the family’s quality of life.
Thanks to the efforts of Select Aid, Ismail and his family are now able to live in a safe, accessible, and comfortable home and continue to build a new life in Turkey. Despite the challenges he has faced, Ismail remains an inspirational figure who has demonstrated incredible strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

As a volunteer with Select Aid charity organisation, I had an incredibly positive experience. The organisation’s commitment to making a difference in the world is truly inspiring, and I was honoured to be a part.
